2006 Blog'D Award - Best New Mainstream Comic

To keep the "ensemble cast" vibe going (see previous award winners Deadwood and Heroes), ensemble-cast (of characters AND creators) comic 52 wins the Blog'D Award for Best New Mainstream Comic. Released as a weekly book (the title comes from the number of weeks in a year), this year-long maxi-series chronicles a year of real-time in the DC Comics Universe.

While DC is best known for its iconic characters - Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman - 52 (with little exception) doesn't include these characters. Instead, the writers and artists are following characters that haven't been given the spotlight proper in a long time, if ever. Animal Man. The Question. Black Adam. Steel. Renee Montoya. These are some of the characters whose stories are being told in this yet-to-miss-a-shipping-date comic. At least one character who rose to near-fame in the pages of 52 has seen not just a rise to prominence, but an end as well with his death, and at least two new characters that appear poised to take their place proper withint the DC Universe have made their debut in this book's pages as well.

While the book has had rotating artists gracing its pages, the book is still a singular vision of a year in the DC Universe without the "big three," and is definitely worth of the Blog'D Award and worth reading.
